Beaches & Natural Pools in Madeira

Where to swim in Madeira: Porto Moniz natural pools, Seixal's black sand, Calheta's golden beach, Funchal lidos and the boat to Porto Santo.

Manage your expectations

Madeira is volcanic, so most "beaches" are pebble or shingle rather than soft sand, and many swimming spots are rocky coves or built lido complexes with sea-water pools and ladders. For long golden-sand beaches, Porto Santo (a short ferry or flight away) is the place — a 9 km stretch of fine sand.

Natural sea pools

  • Porto Moniz – the island's most famous volcanic pools, lava-formed basins filled by the Atlantic on the northwest coast. There is a free natural area and an organised complex with facilities.
  • Seixal – natural pools plus a lovely black-sand beach nearby, with green cliffs as a backdrop.
  • Doca do Cavacas (Funchal) – natural rock pools on the western edge of Funchal.

Sand and pebble beaches

  • Praia da Calheta – an artificial golden-sand beach (imported sand) on the southwest coast, sheltered and family-friendly.
  • Praia do Porto do Seixal – natural black volcanic sand on the north coast.
  • Machico – an imported golden-sand beach (Praia de Banda d'Além) in the east, plus a town beach.
  • Praia Formosa (Funchal) – the city's largest beach area, mostly pebbles.
  • Ponta do Sol / Madalena do Mar – sunny pebble beaches on the southwest coast.
  • Prainha (near Caniçal) – one of the few naturally sandy (dark sand) beaches.

Lidos and sea bathing in Funchal

Funchal's seafront has several lido complexes (e.g. Lido and Ponta Gorda areas) with saltwater pools, sunbathing decks and sea access by ladder — convenient for a swim without leaving the city.

Tips

  • The north coast can have bigger swells; check sea conditions and respect flags.
  • Water shoes help on pebbles and rocky entries.
  • Many natural pools and lidos charge a small entry fee in season and have lifeguards in summer.
