Getting Around Madeira

Transport in Madeira explained: renting a car on mountain roads, the bus network, taxis and transfers, and how to reach trailheads without driving.

From the airport to Funchal

Madeira Airport (FNC) is about 20 km east of Funchal, roughly a 25–35 minute drive. Options:

  • Aerobus / airport shuttle: a coach service runs between the airport and Funchal hotels; buy on board or online. Good value if you have little luggage.
  • Public bus: regional buses stop near the airport but are less convenient with luggage.
  • Taxi: fixed-ish fares to Funchal; readily available outside arrivals.
  • Transfer / rideshare: pre-booked private transfers are popular and Bolt operates on the island.
  • Rental car: car rental desks are at the airport; this is the most flexible option for exploring.

Should you rent a car?

A rental car is the best way to see Madeira if you are comfortable driving. The island is small but mountainous, with steep roads, hairpins and many tunnels. Roads are generally good and the VR1/VE expressways make south-coast travel fast. Parking in central Funchal is mostly paid garages. If you would rather not drive the steep roads, base yourself in Funchal and combine buses, taxis and guided day tours.

Buses

Public buses are reliable but designed for residents, so timetables can be sparse to remote trailheads.

  • Horários do Funchal (yellow buses) serve Funchal and the surrounding area.
  • Rodoeste covers the west, SAM the east, and other operators the north. Plan return times carefully for hikes — some trailheads have only a few services a day.

Taxis, transfers and tours

Taxis are plentiful in Funchal and can be hired for half- or full-day island tours at negotiated rates. Bolt works in and around Funchal. Organised day tours (east, west, "Skywalk and Santana", levada walks, jeep safaris) are an easy way to reach hard-to-access spots without driving or arranging bus connections.

Cable cars

The Funchal–Monte cable car climbs from the Old Town up to Monte for sweeping views; from Monte you can ride the famous wicker toboggan (carros de cesto) down toward Funchal, or take a second cable car to the Botanical Garden. There is also a cable car at Achadas da Cruz in the far northwest, descending a sheer cliff to a tiny coastal hamlet and fajã.

Getting to Porto Santo

Porto Santo is reached by a ferry (the Lobo Marinho) from Funchal, taking around 2–2.5 hours, or by a short flight. The ferry can be rough in winter; book ahead in summer.
