Porto Santo — Madeira's Golden Island

Porto Santo's 9 km golden beach, how to get there by ferry or plane from Madeira, and whether a day trip or overnight stay makes sense.

The golden island

Porto Santo is Madeira's smaller neighbour, about 40 km northeast, and is completely different in character: flat, dry and golden, with a famous 9 km beach of fine golden sand running along its south coast. While Madeira is dramatic and green, Porto Santo is the archipelago's true beach destination, prized for sunbathing, swimming and its reputedly therapeutic sand.

Getting there

  • Ferry: the Lobo Marinho sails from Funchal, taking roughly 2–2.5 hours; it can be a rough crossing in winter and books up in summer. Good for a day trip or a few nights.
  • Flight: a short hop from Madeira airport to Porto Santo's airport.

What to do

  • Relax on the long sandy beach and swim in calm, clear water.
  • Visit Vila Baleira, the main town, and the Casa de Colombo (Christopher Columbus House) — Columbus lived here.
  • Drive or hike to viewpoints like Pico do Castelo, Pico do Facho (the highest point) and the Portela windmills.
  • Play the well-regarded golf course, or try watersports and boat trips.
  • See the Fonte da Areia cliffs and quieter northern coast.

Good to know

Porto Santo is low-key and quieter than Madeira, especially outside summer. A day trip works but an overnight lets you enjoy the beach at a relaxed pace. Bring sun protection — it is sunnier and more exposed than Madeira, with little natural shade on the beach.
