Madeira Weather & When to Go

Madeira's microclimates explained: the best months to visit, north vs south coast weather, mountain conditions and what to pack for levada walks.

Climate in a nutshell

Madeira is called the "island of eternal spring" for its mild, stable subtropical climate. Temperatures are comfortable year-round, typically ranging from the mid-teens °C in winter to the mid/high-20s °C in summer near the coast. The sea is swimmable much of the year, warmest in late summer and early autumn.

Microclimates

Madeira's terrain creates strong microclimates. The south coast (Funchal, southwest) is sunnier and drier; the north coast is greener and wetter; and the mountains can be cloudy, cold and windy even when the coast is sunny — or clear above a cloud layer when the coast is grey. It is common to drive 30 minutes and find completely different weather. Always pack a layer and a rain jacket for the heights.

Season by season

  • Spring (Mar–May) – lush and flowery; the Flower Festival is a highlight. Pleasant for hiking.
  • Summer (Jun–Sep) – warmest and driest, best for swimming; busiest and priciest. Great for the high mountains, though afternoons can cloud over.
  • Autumn (Oct–Nov) – still warm, fewer crowds, warm sea; occasional rain.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb) – mild but the wettest period, especially in the north and mountains; New Year's Eve fireworks in Funchal draw big crowds and high prices.

Best time to visit

There is no bad time. For hiking and general sightseeing, spring and autumn offer warm, quieter conditions. For beach and sea time, summer to early autumn is best (or head to Porto Santo). For the famous fireworks, come around New Year but book far ahead. For high-mountain sunrises (Pico do Arieiro), aim for stable, clear spells and check webcams the evening before.

Practical packing

Bring layers, a light rain jacket, sun protection (the UV is strong, especially on exposed peaks and São Lourenço), proper walking shoes, and a headlamp for levada tunnels.
